ARGENTINA

Stretching from the Antarctic to the subtropics, from the vast plains of the pampas to the soaring peaks of the Andes, Argentina is a country of incredible contrasts. Argentina's population is equally diverse, reflecting millions of fascinating stories of immigration.

CaminitoArgentina's throbbing heart is Buenos Aires, home to one third of all Argentines. Here's where most Argentinean journeys begin. Traversing Buenos Aires from the chic Palermo region, through ritzy Retiro and gritty La Boca is a journey in itself. Even the dead have tales to tell here if you stop off at the cemetery, a Gothic city within a city. BA is however very much a city for the living, laying claim as South America's cultural capital and an Olympic nightlife.

Gaucho SaltaSurrounding Buenos Aires is the immense expanse of the pampas, grasslands that became Argentina's bread and beef basket and birthplace of the romanticised figure of the gaucho, the South American version of the cowboy. The delicious carnivorous tradition of the asado criollo, an open fire roast hails from here.

PeritoFurther south and the landscapes become dramatic as you enter Patagonia. Patagonia's vastness and jawdropping natural beauty appeal to the wanderer. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid took refuge here in the windswept back country. During the southern summer months visitors are dwarfed by impressive sights as the Perito Moreno glaciar and the towering peaks of Chaltén.

At the opposite end of the country, along the borders with Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay lies the subtropical littoral. This area is famous for being the site of the thundering Iguazú Falls, where 275 enormous waterfalls straddle the Argentinean frontier with Brazil.

PurmamarcaThe North West of Argentina is a fascinating region that offers an eye-boggling variety of landscapes. Blood-red and ochre gorges, verdant valleys, bleached high plateaux under infinite skies. This is the part of Argentina where native Indian culture is strongest and the vestiges of Argentina's colonial past are most notable. The North West is furthermore a logical staging post for those who wish to go on further to Chile and Bolivia.

For wine lovers a trip to the province of Mendoza is a must. This region has been labelled "the next Napa Valley", due to its extremely favourable growing conditions and the exciting influences of many new winemakers building on its long traditions. Excellent Malbecs are the signature wines here.

Sancho Travels has a range of travel options for your consideration in each of these regions, contact us for more information.
